it's really unclear from the information that's been given out by the board of elections on whether my first vote is valid or not. >> reporter: another couple called to tell us that they got not one, not two, three, but four ballots between the two of them. and of course, the big question everybody has for us is, is there potential for voter fraud. >> there should be now concern about double voting. we have procedures in place to catch that. >> reporter: ross goldstein said it all started when his staff caught an error on the bar code that appears above your address on the mailing envelope. >> we were concerned that the ballots were just taking too long to get to the voters. so we reissued those ballots for all of those voters. >> reporter: so far, the state has sent out 10,000 duplicate ballots. if you have not voted yet, he says you can still fill out either of will ballots and send it in, and shred the other. only one will count. >> on every envelope of the
6:01 pm
return ballots, there's a bar code unique to that voter. we scan it into our system. we know if we've gotten the same baroded ballot back from the same voter. and then we will only count one of those bal lots from that voter. >> the maryland state board of elections says if you do send in two ballots, only the second ballot with the later date will count. they say they have been in touch with the vendor who issued these ballots and are confident the problem is under control. >> this is so confusing. if you sent in the first one, does it count or not? >> if you sent in the first one, it counts, unless you send in a second one, and then that first one doesn't count anymore. they go with the ballot that has the later date on it. of course, what's important for everyone to remember is they look at absentee ballots after the election. so this will happen later. >> just yesterday you were talking about the ballots, the absentee ballots going out, missing a key page with some of the questions.
6:02 pm
is this related to that issue? >> that's a big question a lot of people have. and no, these are separate issues. there's been a lot of talk about that today. and we first told you about these absentee ballots missing page two, which includes questions 4 through 7. today governor martin o'malley confirmed it involves less than 20 ballots. so that's good. marylanders for marriage equality reacted today saying they're confident the board of elections will resolve the problems quickly. >> hard to understand how these problems happen. >> we want to remind folks, that the iteam wants to hear from you about these voting problems that pop up between now and election day. call our tip line at 202-# 85-4444, or e-mail us at tips @news4iteam.com. >> glad you're on the case. the state department is not yet commenting on a report that a man in tunisia linked to the

6:05 pm
>> reporter: joe biden was in the buckeye state. >> ohio is going to pick the next president of the united states of america. >> reporter: if the democrats do win here, is that really it? >> everyone always says, no republican has been elected president without ohio. and that's absolutely true. but you know, every four years we break rules. >> reporter: the obama plans to take ohio, plus iowa and wisconsin, or new hampshire, or colorado, maybe virginia. >> the problem for the president, he has leads in these swing states by two, three points. the problem is, he's not over 50% in any of them. >> reporter: and 50-plus one is the winning number. so the pace will stay intense. governor romney tonight in iowa, president obama on the "tonight show" in l.a., then a late, late night rally in nevada, then an air force one red-eye to tampa to start tomorrow's swing state push in florida. i'm steve handelsman, news4.

indiana senate candidate trying explain a comment about abortion in cases of rape. here's what richard mourdock said last night that got such a reaction. >> i struggled with it myself for a long time but came to realize that life is a gift from god. i think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that god intended to happen. >> today mourdock accused opponents of twisting his words. he said rape is clearly not something god intends to happen, but is also not backing off from his position that life begins at conception. >> for those who want to kind of twist the comments and use them for partisan political gain, you know, i think that's what's wrong with washington these days. you know, i spoke from my heart. i spoke with my principle. i spoke from my faith. >> mitt romney just released a tv ad in indiana backing mourdock for senate. the romney campaign said that the governor disagrees with mourdock's stand on abortion but his campaign is not pulling the

6:15 pm
>> translator: all i want to tell you is after my visit to damascus, there was an agreement for a cease-fire during ead. they will release a statement either today or tomorrow. >> reporter: on the other side there is confusion, too, because the rebel forces in syria do not act with one voice. one rebel commander began listing the conditions that would need to be met in order for his men to lay down their guns. there are other unanswered questions, how long would the cease-fire last and who would enforce it. one thing there is no doubt about, the ordinary syrians need a break from the violence. it's been going on for 19 months, in which 30,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands forced from their homes. nbc news, beirut. muslim-americans could play a significant role in the upcoming presidential election. there's a new poll out today in which more than 90% who were polled say they plan to vote on

6:17 pm
it does come here. i think we'll see pretty big impacts from it. today, no impacts from this storm. we saw impacts of high pressure, and plenty of sunshine. that brought temperatures to record levels. high temperature today of 84 degrees. today was simply gorgeous. that's the way i think things are going to stay throughout the rest of the evening tonight and into the day tomorrow. there's the 84, the record high. 84 set back in 2001. the low this morning, 59. and that's only a few degrees away from our average high temperature this time of year. so we are well above average by close to 20 degrees. out there right now, 75 degrees, as the sun is making its way down. it's going to be a very nice evening across our region. temperatures still 70 degrees in winchester, 72 in culpepper, 76 in fredericksburg, 77 near la plata. these temperatures very much like summertime numbers than late fall numbers. but that's what we're seeing this time of year. very warm air making its way in here. an area of high pressure continues to be on top of us.
6:18 pm
because that we're not dealing with any rainfall. at least not today. and really over the next couple of days. next best chance of rain coming on sunday. it will come with hurricane sandy, and another frontal boundary that makes its way down there. that's really the key. this is not the only piece of this storm. sandy down to jamaica right now. the eye moving over the eastern portion of jamaica. next in its path will be cuba and toward portions of the bahamas. where is the storm right now? it's located just off the coast of jamaica. winds of 80 miles per hour, moving to the north at 14 miles per hour. it's a very strong hurricane, at least pressurewise, especially for a category 1. moving across bahamas tomorrow, and off the coast of miami probably by friday morning. this will bring very strong winds and rain to the miami area. upwards of 50, 60-mile-an-hour winds. they are not expecting hurricane force winds, but they do have tropical storm warnings in effect for the miami area. it makes its way up to the carolinas, and then out to sea. everybody saying, out to sea?
6:19 pm
that's a good thing for us, right? well, it would be, if it continued to go out to sea. the latest computer model continues to bring this closer to the coast. not only that, as the frontal boundary moves down from the north, it will pick up what's left of sandy and what's left of sandy could be a pretty big storm and then move it right back into the coast. this has not happened very often, but it does happen. if it were to happen for us, we could be talking about a major storm for portions of the mid-atlantic and northeast. especially up towards philadelphia, new york, and up towards boston. here very high impacts. saturday, low impagcts in the green. coastal section of north carolina will really get impacted. sunday, the aids walk should be fine. the marine corps marathon on sunday could be impacted by winds. chesapeake and down to the beaches, it is monday, if this is able to make that turn back
6:20 pm
towards the coast, that would include the i-95 corridor and a high impact scenario for wind and rain. we're talking about very strong wind. a lot of rain, not to mention coastal flooding. and numerous power outages. this could be thousands of power outages, maybe millions across portions of the northeast. that sounds like an exaggeration, it is most likely not. so you want to make sure to keep it right here with us, on team 4, and nbcwashington.com. 73 to 78 degrees, tomorrow those numbers starting off quite warm. 50 to 60 degrees. through the next couple of days, another couple of warm ones. 75 tomorrow, 71 on your friday. then we start to go downhill saturday afternoon, a high of 68. but saturday looking pretty good. sunday, monday, tuesday and maybe even halloween that we'll be dealing with this storm. but the biggest impacts coming on monday. we'll continue to watch this for you right here. >> this is one time i really hope you're wrong. >> i do, too. me too, for sure.
6:21 pm
>> thank you, doug. coming up, political signs burned. election season takes a nasty turn in virginia. a gunman on the loose in california after a back-to-back shooting that started at a family-owned business. coming up in sports, the tigers and the giants getting ready to square off in game one of the world series. the redskins still trying to figure out what's been going wrong with their secondary. and robert griffin iii welcoming back a familiar face. as news4 at 6:00 continues.
6:22 pm
6:23 pm
president obama: there's just no quit in america... and you're seeing that right now. over five million new jobs. exports up forty one percent. home values... rising. our auto industry... back. and our heroes are coming home. we're not there yet, but we've made real progress and the... last thing we should do is turn back now. here's my plan for the next four years:
6:24 pm
making education and training a national priority; building on our manufacturing boom; boosting american-made energy; reducing the deficits responsibly by cutting where... we can, and asking the wealthy to pay a little more. and ending the war in afghanistan, so we can... do some nation-building here at home. that's the right path. so read my plan, compare it to governor romney's... and decide which is better for you. it's an honor to be your president... and i'm asking for your vote... so together, we can keep moving america forward. i'm barack obama and i approve this message. there was frightening moments for a woman in northeast d.c. she said she was cornered by two pit bulls while walking down a street. pat collins is in the neighborhood to explain why this isn't the first time this has happened.

pat? >> reporter: doreen, concern tonight in this northeast neighborhood about two aggressive stray pit bulls. one attack on 11th street, another one on 15th. this is d barbershop at 15th and d northeast. it's owned by demonte bailey. it's got the barbershop stuff, the chair, and the bible, and d bat, just in case. and yesterday demonte, he stepped up to the plate. it happened yesterday afternoon along 15th street. a woman is out walking her two dogs, when out of nowhere appears not one, but two pit bulls. untagged, unleashed, unlicensed. they surround her and her dogs. she gets scared. she goes into the barbershop. demonte bailey to the rescue. >> the dogs were starting to get very aggressive. i told her to bring her dogs inside the barbershop while they
6:26 pm
cooled off. >> reporter: how did you scare the dogs away? >> with the bat. >> reporter: how did you do that? >> just hit it up against the ground. that startled them a little bit. >> reporter: and they ran back up the alley. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: this man wasn't so lucky. >> bite marks from the upper jaw and his lower jaw ram and there's back and blue bruise es. >> reporter: he was britten by two stray pit bulls. same description, same neighborhood. it happened on 11th street northeast october 12th as he and his wife were walking home. >> they seemed friendly. walked around our legs a couple times. and then one just abruptly turned and bit me right in the groin area. luckily a few inches away from vital parts. >> reporter: this advice from the washington humane society. if you're attacked by a dog, relax your shoulders, turn your
6:27 pm
body and face away from the animal, do not make eye contact. they say if you do this, you'll be seen as nonthreatening, and it will defuse the dog's aggression. live now from northeast, i'm pat collins, news4. less than two weeks, people in maryland will decide whether to legalize same-sex marriage in the state. it's question 6 on the ballot there. >> a pastor in baltimore county is taking heat for saying that same-sex marriage is in his words worthy of death. chris gordon reports from randallstown, maryland. >> reporter: pastor robert anderson made a statement at a meeting hosted by the marriage alie abc. he quoted romans 1 in the bible. >> listen to the last verse. knowing the righteous judgment of god that those who practice such things are deserving of death.
6:28 pm
not only do the same, but watch this, for those who also approve of those who practice these things. if we don't vote against it, then we are approving these things that are worthy of death. >> reporter: marylanders for marriage equality which urges a yes vote on question 6 to legalize same-sex marriage feels opponents have gone too far. >> well, we really think that it was very inappropriate for the maryland marriage alliance to hold a panel where they used the words worthy of death to describe gay and lesbian couples. >> reporter: here in randallstown, maryland, pastor anderson showed us the bible passage. romans chapter 1 of the christian standard bible saying those who practice such things deserve to die. >> that was written by the apostle paul himself. >> you made the conclusion that anybody voting for this, question 6 may be worthy of death. >> well, worthy of death in that they are promoting the lifestyle
6:29 pm
and they are promoting what same-sex marriage is all about. and that is what we're standing against. now when i sea worthy of death, i'm not talking about violence or hurting anybody. that's not my task and what i'm inferring. worthy of death means it can lead to death. >> reporter: anderson hosted this meeting of clergy who all oppose question 6 and are preaching against it between now and election today. chris gordon, dmus 4. the marriage alliance released a statement that reads any attempt to imply that dr. anderson's reading of scripture was a call to harm gays and lesbians is false, and serves as a distraction from the real issues of this campaign. police near los angeles are on the scene of a deadly shooting at a business and a home two blocks away. investigators say two people have died. two others have been wounded. police originally reported three people had died in downey, california, this afternoon. they're still searching for the

6:31 pm
stevens last saw it and grabbed these images. all that was left of the 4 by 8 plastic coated romney for president banner were two metal supports and some burn marks. >> the dogs were barking so i came downstairs and looked out my front window, and there was a gentleman standing on the front porch, and i looked past him to see the sign, and a fireball in my front yard. >> reporter: stevens said when she came outside about 2:00 a.m. monday, her first thought was that the fire had been set deliberately. >> it's one thing to spray paint a sign or slash it or steal it, it's another to set it on fire. that's wrong. >> reporter: leesburg police officers responded and took a report. >> due to the nature of the call, we did turn the case over to the fire marshal's office. >> reporter: although this is the most serious, nearly every jurisdiction in maryland, virginia and the district has reported vandalism to political signs this year. >> i didn't hear anything. >> reporter: the stevens'

a bufrl day today. high temperature of 84. take a look at the twilight as the sun set just about a half hour ago. beautiful conditions today. high of 84 actually tying a record. 75 in college park, 72 in reston. southern fairfax county, fort belvoir right now at 76 degrees. sandy still well away from our area, and this forecast is going to be changing a little bit over the next couple of days. but right now, we're forecasting high impact down to the carolinas, and low impact in southern virginia on saturday. on sunday, even for the marine corps marathon early sunday morning, low impact here with wind, some rain, but not too bad. i think you should be able to run the marathon, it just is not going to be the best idea to get out there without making sure you have on the right clothes. monday, i think everybody in the mid-atlantic and northeast has a high impact from this storm. once again, we're going to be watching this one very closely over the next couple of days.

could it stay out to sea? yes. will it stay out to see? that still remains to be seen. but we'll continue to keep you updated right here on nbc 4. guys? this is the xfinity sports desk brought to you by xfinity, your home for the most live sports. dan, you've got bad news here. doesn't he have the longest streak? >> barber goes back to 1998. >> wow. >> which is, what, 14, 15 years. >> but that's in jeopardy now. >> this is kind of a surprise, because london's been banged up before and been out there to play. that consecutive game streak that sits at 231 straight games goes back to his first year in the league in 1998, the longest streak in the nfl. fletcher missed practice today because of a sore hamstring and a balance problem. fletcher is scheduled to see a

neurologist for that balance issue. so we're going to have to watch that closely. chris cooley did not look out of balance in his first practice of the season. the redskins re-signed their popular tight end to help fill the void left by fred davis. cooley joked half of his teammates thought he was there doing broadcasting work. cooley will have a chance to catch a pass that actually counts from rookie quarterback robert griffin iii. >> it was great to have cool man back, as i call him. and he did good today. i've always wanted to throw a pass to him. i completed one in the preseason, but that doesn't count. hopefully we can get one in the next game. he's coming back to do his job. that involves blocking, doing a lot of other things, and catching the ball in the backfield. >> it's great to be back. it's exciting for me. i woke up like a little kid. i've always loved the game. i think it was nice to sit back and look around and watch
6:48 pm
football games and watch the league, and i looked at it and thought, i can definitely do this. i'm as good as a lot of these players. it's a good opportunity for me to prove that. >> still no word on exactly what cooley's role will be on sunday. although, robert griffin iii did say during his press conference that logan paulson will have a chance to start. i don't know if that means he has a chance to start like cooley has a chance to start, or that he will actually have a chance to start. >> sounds to me like cooley's starting. what do you think? >> i don't know. i think he has to convince them he's actually in shape and ready to go. that would be nice to see, though. dead last, that's where the redskins rank in pass defense. vikings christian ponder, he passed for 299. no single play hurt more than the giants game-winning touchdown pass last sunday that was nearly three-quarters of the field. this was the play the redskins coaching staff saw coming.

they had actually had the wide receiver victor cruz double covered by josh. the skins went from the elation of a presumed victory to the agony of defeat in about 15 seconds. skins cornerback deangelo hall said this was all in the skins breaking down, not the giants and eli manning making a great play. >> you know, i don't feel like he made that play, i feel like we gave him that play. it was nothing he did to, oh, man, he saw this, one guy set his feet and not do this. it wasn't something he was just a rocket scientist. we just played that as bad as possible. >> i appreciate him giving it to me. thank you. no, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out either. you got a guy running open and you hit him.
6:50 pm
if that's the way they want to put it in their heads, that's fine. >> i sense a little friction here leading up to the next giants game. >> he shouldn't have said that. that's ridiculous. the guy made a great play. whether somebody broke down or not, you know, that's chicken stuff, man. don't do that. >> sour grapes a little bit. >> come on. they lost and they shouldn't have. >> i don't think he really meant -- hey, they made a bad play. you know, talking about deangelo. we made a bad play and they capitalized on it. >> that's how it goes. >> exactly. >> if you don't do what you're supposed to do, you get beat. let's talk baseball now. game one of the world series in san francisco tonight. barry zito the starting pitcher for the giants, verlander gets the call for the tigers. detroit is well rested after dispatching the yankees with ease. the giants have the momentum. after coming back from a three-games to one deficit to beat the cardinals.
6:51 pm
bruce bochy knows his team is ready. >> i think you look at marco scutaro, angel pagan, they know how hard it is to get here and how long they've been waiting to get here. those are hungry players. they're a big reason why we're here. they were determined to help this club get to the world series. because they haven't been here. this is why you play the game. just because you're fortunate to be on a team that won one, i think that's why you want another one. you realize how good the feeling is and obviously that's why you'd like to have another one. be part of another world championship would be quite a treat. >> coming up in just about an hour. the wizards still trying to replace john wall. he'll be out for at least another month with the knee injury. sheldon ma shell rin -- and mack getting a

chance. so far, head coach randy whitman very happy with the progress the price has made. >> probably his two best performances these last two games. he's kind of solidified running the offense, getting guys in spots. the flow of the game. the pace of the game. it's been good. >> he's a big part of this team. with john hurt, he's going to have to step in and do big things for us. >> more continuity comes, the more games you play, the more minutes you play together, this is our fourth or fifth game now. i think we've got a feel for each other, between those games and the practices, we're gaining more confidence in each other. so the first game of the regular season coming up for the guys in, what, six days now. right around the corner. >> i can't get my head around basketball. we've been so busy with football and baseball. >> we've got a new one.
6:53 pm
>> you won't be paying attention to hockey. >> that's true. thank you. >> unfortunately. coming up, remember the kid in ireland who found the message in the

how are we looking out there, doug? >> looking great tomorrow. looking great on friday. looking okay on saturday. and then sunday, monday, tuesday, once again, we'll be watching this one closely the next couple of days. keep it right here. we've got you updated. >> thanks, doug. an update on the story of the 10-year-old kid who recently found a message in a bottle. on a beach in ireland. two girls from canada threw that bottle into the water off the coast of quebec eight years ago. those girls are women now. they're both 20 years old. the e-mail address they listed was no longer in use, so ocean

did some detective work and tracked them down. and today he had a conversation with them by skype. he showed them the bottle. and he said his mother is really tired of getting calls from all the newspapers. >> my mom is getting a bit annoyed with the newspapers that kept on ringing. and she said, if you're finding another bottle, throw it back into the water. >> makes sense to me. the bottle traveled 2,485 miles before it washed up on a beach in ireland. good for him. >> that is a great story. >> that's a wonderful story for him. that's our broadcast for us. come back tonight for news4 at 11:00 and stay tuned for president obama, he'll be on the "tonight show" with jay leno tonight. ike leggett: gaming generated one hundred and eighty...
